Description of the attraction
Palazzo Comunale is one of the main palaces of Grosseto, a tourist attraction of the city. It faces the northern end of Piazza Dante. Nearby is the majestic Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The left side facade of the Palazzo faces Corso Carducci, the main street in the historic center of Grosseto. Today, Palazzo Comunale houses the Giunta (administrative executive body), the City Council and the administrative offices of Grosseto.
The palazzo was built in the second half of the 19th century, or rather, in 1867, to house the City Council, which until that time occupied the now destroyed building of the Palazzo Pretorio. In the place where the palace stands today, there was once the church of San Giovanni Decollato, later secularized and adapted as a warehouse. The church was then finally demolished.
Palazzo Comunale has three floors. Its main façade is preceded by a portico of three semicircular arches separated by powerful pilasters. National flags are installed on a small terrace above the central arch. Through the other two semicircular arches you can go inside. The upper part of the façade is notable for the clock pediment.
The left side façade of Palazzo Comunale is in some respects similar to the main façade - it also has entrance doors with semicircular arches. The ground floor of both facades is paved with stone, while the upper floors are completely plastered. In general, the general style of Palazzo Comunale can be attributed to the neo-Renaissance.
