Description of the attraction

The Church of the Great Martyr Panteleimon is the main shrine of the city of Kharkov, which is located on one of the main streets of the city - Klochkovskaya Street. The temple was named after the righteous great martyr and physician Panteleimon.

The church was built in 1882 in the Peskov area of the city of Kharkov. The construction of the monastery was carried out quite quickly, and already in 1883. walls, an iron roof and a three-tiered bell tower were erected. The temple was built in the Russian-Byzantine style. The work was carried out under the direction of the architect F. Danilov.

In 1885, the first services were held in the church. In 1897-1898. the temple was reconstructed by the famous architect M. Lovtsov, it was he who was the author of the Dmitrievskaya church and the Annunciation Cathedral. He decorated the facade of the church with decorative details, which gave the building a more elegant and festive look. Reconstruction also preferred an extension, in which M. Lovtsov used the style of Russian architecture of the 16th-17th centuries. A hipped dome towered above the main entrance to the temple, and on its sides there were decorative turrets with onion ends.

At the beginning of 1930, the temple was closed, after which it was used for various services. In the course of these events, the tower with a dome and decorative turrets were dismantled, and a cross was torn out of the bell tower dome. All subsequent long years in the temple were carried out external and internal restoration work.

In 1999, to the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Kharkiv Diocese, all the finishing works were completed in the Panteleimon Church. In order to return to the shrine all its former beauty and splendor, it took ten long years. In parallel with the restoration work in the temple, the improvement of its territory was carried out. A beautiful fence was erected around the church of the great martyr Panteleimon.
