Description of the attraction
In the northern part of the Aegean Sea lies the island of Thassos - one of the most picturesque Greek islands. Its magnificent natural landscapes and abundance of greenery, marble rocks, beautiful beaches and clear water attract a huge number of nature lovers and leisurely relaxation to the island every year.
The capital of the island is officially called Thassos, but is better known as Limenas. This picturesque coastal town is located on the north coast of the island and is its main commercial, tourist and administrative center. Limenas is also interesting for its rich cultural and historical heritage.
The main attractions of the historical part of the city are the temple of St. Nicholas and the symbol of Thassos - the Vatopedi monastery. A huge number of ancient ruins have survived to this day, testifying to the former splendor and prosperity of ancient Thassos (mainly due to the development of marble quarries). Today you can see parts of the fortress walls, the ruins of the acropolis, the ancient theater, the remains of various sanctuaries (Athens, Apollo, Dionysus, etc.), the ancient Agora and much more. Most of the important archaeological sites are concentrated in the picturesque area of the "old port". Of the ancient sights, the cave-sanctuary of the god Pan, located on the top of a hill, with well-preserved rock paintings, is also interesting. The city's Archaeological Museum with a magnificent collection of artifacts is also worth a visit.
The tourist infrastructure of the city is well developed. There is an excellent selection of comfortable hotels and apartments, as well as a wide variety of shops. In the cozy restaurants, taverns and cafes, you can have a great time and taste the excellent local cuisine. The coast of Limenas and its surroundings will delight vacationers with its magnificent beaches.
