Description of the attraction

Medina is the oldest part of the city in the Arab countries. In Marrakech, it is located near the famous Ali Ben Yusuf Mosque and is the busiest place in the city. Medina has a very reliable defense - 10-meter fortress walls with 202 watchtowers and a huge number of gates. Therefore, you can walk here almost safely. There are many other interesting historical sights in the Medina, including the majestic Koutoubia Mosque.

The old part of the city is famous for its central Djema el-Fna square, from which numerous streets lead in different directions. Djema el-Fna can be safely called the heart of the city. This place resembles a large labyrinth in which life stops only late at night. Without this square, magnificent Marrakech would be just an ordinary town.

Located near the Koutoubia mosque, Djemaa el-Fna square was built in the XI century. The spacious square has been the hallmark of this kingdom for more than one century. But there was a time when this place was not very well known. From the Arabic language, the name Djema el-Fna is translated as "square of the dead", which is not at all strange. It was here, until the XIX century. carried out executions of robbers. But even at that time, Djema el-Fna played a very important cultural and social role in the life of the city.

Today, the central square of Marrakech is the point of attraction for all tourists who have visited this magnificent city. Here everyone will find entertainment for themselves. In the square you can see storytellers, street performances of musicians, acrobats, henna makers, monkey trainers and even snake charmers. Also on Djema El-Fna there is a huge number of shops where you can buy interesting souvenirs, and many restaurants. It is from here that all sightseeing tours of Marrakech begin.
