Description of the attraction
The old bazaar is located on the left bank of the Neretva, in the historic center of Mostar. It is not a market in the usual sense, but old streets with open counters of numerous shops.
In the Middle Ages, Mostar emerged at the crossroads of trade routes and was one large market for the whole region. At that time, more than 500 craft workshops worked in narrow streets. They were dominated by jewelers, goldsmiths and chasers for metal, in Bosnian - "kuyunjush". Hence the name of the trading area - Kuyunjiluk. It began to be built up in the 16th century, expanding at the expense of individual quarters and entire streets of artisans. At the workshops of gunsmiths, weavers, tanners, trade shops were immediately opened.
Having significantly lost in size, the town has retained its oriental flavor and trade traditions to this day. Here you can buy absolutely any souvenirs - from handmade carpets, fabrics and national clothes to copper coffee pots and plates, chased paintings, leather goods, decor items. Modern standard crafts and antiques can be seen nearby.
The bazaar is always full of people and lively. Many do not go shopping, but on an excursion to feel the spirit of antiquity, moreover, authentic. But all the same, they do not leave without a purchase - it is impossible to resist such an assortment. Although the merchants in this oriental bazaar behave in a European manner, calm and polite.
Cafes deserve special attention - with national cuisine, oriental sweets and the strongest coffee.
There is also a donkey monument on the market. Although this is a remake (staged in the eighties), it harmoniously blended into the landscape, quickly overgrown with legends and traditions. So, his bronze ears simply shine from the fact that merchants rub them every morning - for successful sales.
