Description of the attraction

One of the religious attractions of Magnitogorsk is the Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the northeastern part of the city, in the village of Dimitrov.

The temple was erected in 1946. It was based on a private wooden house. The initiator of the construction was G. I. Nosov was the then director of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works.

The Church of Michael the Archangel has an interesting history and is considered unique - in the country where churches were closed and destroyed, a new church was built. In the same year, when the church in the name of Michael the Archangel was erected, the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was completed.

Initially, the city did not need temples. In 1929, the construction of the Metallurgical Plant began. The construction of the plant was an all-Union construction site and took place at a time when industrialization was being carried out in the country. For this, a huge number of workers gathered, who did not need churches - and this is how the atheist city of Magnitogorsk appeared.

With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, a new stream of people arrived in Magnitogorsk, mostly immigrants from the front-line zone. It was very difficult for people who lost their homes and loved ones, who endured hunger and cold, only with faith in a bright future. So they reached out to God again. This fact, most likely, was the reason for such a unique case - the construction of two temples in a violent atheist country.

The Church of Michael the Archangel was a little more fortunate than the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, however, she also had to go through difficult times. The church was originally made of wood. When she was the only one in the city, she became too small for all the parishioners. Local authorities did not allow church expansion. But this did not stop the residents of the city, and they nevertheless obtained permission from the authorities for major repairs. After collecting some money, the townspeople built a new stone church. Construction work was completed in 1982. In 2000, a bell tower appeared.

Today, the Church of the Archangel Michael in Magnitogorsk is a functioning brick three-nave church with an elegant four-sided structure under a dome and a multi-tiered bell tower.
