Description of the attraction

The Museum of Fine Arts is located in the Esbjerg City Park, just half a kilometer from its main station. The museum is housed in a striking modern building from 1962. It features predominantly contemporary Danish fine art.

The museum was opened back in 1910 and was originally located in the building of the city library. At first, only Danish modernist paintings were exhibited there, including Harald Giersing, Edward Veje and Wilhelm Lundström. In Girsing, his landscapes stand out, in Veillet - compositions made in the style of cubism, and Lundström's works were largely inspired by the work of Picasso and Cézanne.

In 1962, the museum moved to a new building designed by Jutta and Ovo Tapdrup. It is built on a hillside overlooking the port area. It is curious that at the top of this hill stands the famous symbol of Esbjerg - the water tower of the late 19th century. The building itself consists of several asymmetrical floors with numerous balconies due to the location of the building.

At the same time, the museum acquired a collection of sculptures by the famous abstractionist Robert Jacobsen and paintings by the surrealist expressionist Richard Mortensen. Also in the Esbjerg Museum of Fine Arts, members of the avant-garde movement COBRA, which found inspiration in primitive and folk art, are equally represented. Particularly distinguished are the works of Asger Jorn, the founder of abstract expressionism, who was also fond of artistic ceramics, woodcarving, the creation of prints and collages. It is also worth noting the work of the contemporary artist Mikael Kvium, a supporter of the realistic direction in art, which sometimes even goes beyond the grotesque.

In 1997, the Esbjerg Museum of Fine Arts was merged with the City Concert Hall. The new building is made of glass and ceramics, and the main façade is supported by interesting mushroom-shaped columns.
