Description of the attraction
The boundary pillar between the lands of Brest and the Brest Fortress was installed in 1836. This is the only surviving pillar of the many pillars that marked the border between the Brest Fortress and Brest.
Brest is one of the oldest cities in Belarus. Its existence is evidenced by the "Tale of Bygone Years" dated 1019. During the existence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the city was strategically located at the confluence of the Mukhavets River with the Western Bug.
After the war of 1812, the Russian Empire decided to fortify its western borders and build several defensive structures and fortresses. One of the fortresses was planned to be built on the territory of the ancient city of Brest.
Since the fortifications were to be built on the site of urban development, it was decided to move the city of Brest 3 kilometers upstream of the Mukhavets. For this, the old city was almost completely demolished (with the exception of a few church buildings), and the new city, called Brest-Litovsk, was rebuilt on the new territory.
Built in 1833-1842, the Brest Fortress was a completely military city and did not obey the city authorities, just as Brest-Litovsk had little in common with the Brest Fortress. To divide the land, boundary posts were built.
The boundary post is built of bricks. It is located at the intersection of modern Lenin and Gogol streets. On the column there is a marble plaque with a commemorative inscription: "… This column served as the border between the lands of the city and the fortress from 1836 to 1915"
