Description of the attraction

Granaries in Bydgoszcz are historical warehouse buildings in the old part of Bydgoszcz, which are mainly located on the embankment of the Brda River. Granaries were used to store agricultural products and food, which were transported by water.

The presence of grain barns in Bydgoszcz was associated with the important commercial role of the city. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Bydgoszcz was a large, rapidly developing commercial and economic center. It is believed that in the second half of the 16th century, every tenth inhabitant of the city was economically connected with the delivery or dispatch of goods along the river. In 1579, every sixth ship en route to Gdansk had a home port in Bydgoszcz, and a total of 225 ships were registered in the city. At the beginning of the 17th century, more and more granaries were opened in the city, which were owned by ordinary citizens, but not all, since some belonged to the nobility and the bishop.

The warehouses on the embankment of the Brda River gradually began to serve not only as storage of grain crops, but also ceramics, glass, porcelain and food supplies.

Granaries on the embankment of the Brda River consist of three timber-brick vaults built in 1800 by the merchant Samuel Gotlob Engelmann, as well as a Dutch granary built in 1793. Currently, the Dutch vault houses the Bydgoszcz Museum, while the others house exhibition halls.

These granaries are one of the symbols of the modern city.
