Description of the attraction
The new Landhaus is located in the very center of the main city of Innsbruck - on Maria Theresa street. It was erected immediately after the Anschluss of Austria by Nazi Germany. Previously, the regional council met in the old Baroque building of the old Landhaus, but Adolf Hitler needed a more spacious structure to manage the affairs of the region.
In 1938, Austria became part of the Third Reich and, as happened in other German-occupied territories, the country was divided into certain administrative units - the Reichsgau. Innsbruck became the capital of the Reichsgau Tirol-Vorarlberg and the flags of these regions were placed at the entrance to the new Landhaus. In accordance with the plans of the Fuehrer, this building was conceived as one of the Gauforums, and was supposed to host the party congress in 1940, but this did not happen.
The building of the new landhouse is located in the immediate vicinity of the old one, but it was erected much later. The construction was carried out from 1938 to 1939, and the construction itself was made in the neoclassical architectural style popular during the Third Reich. This is a rather imposing building, distinguished by its main facade, which rises one tier above the main two wings. And in 2005, the New Landhouse building was complemented by another modern wing made of glass and concrete. Government bodies are now located in both rooms of the Landhaus.
Separately, it is worth noting the majestic monument located on the square exactly opposite the New Landhouse. It is dedicated to the victims of the Nazi regime in Austria and is crowned with the symbol of the region - the Tyrolean eagle. The graceful forged lattice of the monument is amazingly executed - it depicts the coats of arms of all 9 federal states of Austria in the shape of a cross.
