Description of the attraction

As evidenced by archival materials, the Mariinsky Women's Gymnasium was opened in Saratov in 1859 "for the training of young girls from noble families" and over its long history it changed many rooms until it finally acquired a building specially built for it.

In 1905, at the corner of Aleksandrovskaya and Konstantinovskaya streets, according to the project of the architect A. N. Klement'ev, an educational institution was opened, which became exemplary in Saratov for many years. The Mariinsky Women's Gymnasium of the Department of Institutions of the Empress Maria with highly qualified teaching staff, with classrooms and offices equipped with all the necessary teaching aids and materials was always kept clean and tidy. The assembly hall was decorated with portraits of the highest persons in gilded frames.

After the October Revolution, the building of the gymnasium was occupied by a secondary school, which was renumbered twice in 1918 and in 1941. During the Great Patriotic War, an evacuation hospital was located here, and in 1946 the building was occupied by the Aviation Technical School named after A. Dementyev, who trained specialists for the newly opened and rapidly developing Aviation Plant in Saratov. Closed until the 1990s, Saratov with the defense industry in the mid-90s ceased to need qualified specialists from the aviation industry and in 2009 a college of information technology and management was opened on the basis of the technical school, which is located in the building of the Mariinsky women's gymnasium to this day.

On the building there are memorial plaques of three heroes who studied in this building at different times, including Lenin Prize Laureate Yuri Sergeevich Bykov, the first chief designer of radiotelephone communications with manned spacecraft.
