Description of the attraction

Museum "Nyenskans" is a historical and archaeological museum in St. Petersburg, located on the Promenade des Anglais, 6. This is the first and only museum, the exposition of which describes the prehistory of the city.

The Nyenskans Museum was founded on May 24, 2003 with the participation of the project manager Dmitry Alexandrovich Kiselev. Initially, the museum was called “700 years - Landskrona, Nevskoe Ustye, Nyenskans”. The museum is located in the former building of Petrozavod, which stands on the site of the once existing fortress Nyenskans. Now Nyenskans is one of the projects of the Okhta Foundation - the Okhta Cultural Heritage Support Fund. The area of the exposition and exhibition area is 250 sq. M.

A tour of the museum is an epic journey through time that begins in the Middle Ages and ends today. A huge historical layer (more than 7 centuries of history) with a large number of wars with great victories and powerful defeats appears before visitors, consisting of stories about both commanders and kings, and about the smallest everyday details of bygone eras.

The exposition opened on the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg. The basis for the permanent museum exposition was the materials of archaeological excavations that were carried out in 1992-2000 by the St. Petersburg archaeological expedition of the IIMK RAS, SZI Heritage at the mouth of the Okhta River, on the territory of settlements of pre-Petrine times. A separate part of the material is devoted to the foundations of stone, the remains of wooden dwellings, the buildings of Nyen (a Swedish city) and a cemetery of the 17th century, studied in 1999-2000 on the right bank of the Okhta River. The exposition continues to display materials from excavations carried out in the same area since 2007 within the framework of the establishment of the Okhta social and business center.

The museum exposition consists of two zones: a stationary exposition and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition tells about the archeology of the Northwest. Temporary exhibitions are dedicated to history, the most important events in the world of archeology and art. Visitors have the opportunity to travel back to the times of the sailing fleet, take part in archaeological expeditions, and rediscover little-known and half-forgotten pages of our history.

The museum presents archaeological monuments that were discovered during the exploration of the territory at the Okhta estuary in the early 1990s: dishes, weapons, jewelry, household items, fragments of smoking pipes; cartographic materials; reproductions of drawings, old engravings, paintings, reflecting the history of the Neva territories of the pre-Petrine period and the way of life of the city of Nyen; diorama of Niena with the Nyenskans fortress; restoration of the equipment of the Swedish knight and the Russian vigilante (beginning of the XIV century).

Nowadays in the historical and archaeological museum "Nienschanz" work is underway on a new exposition. Here are presented archaeological finds that reflect the history of settlements that lived on the territory of St. Petersburg before its formation in 1703 and materials on archeology and the history of the Baltic region.
