Description of the attraction
One of the most attractive places for tourists in Madrid is the most popular flea market in the city, Rastro, located along the Embajadores and Ronda de Toledo streets, right on the Cascorro square, where more than three and a half thousand stalls are located. Here you can find a wide variety of, often unexpected, products, both new and used.
There is evidence that the market existed here as early as the 16th century. Directly outside the market is the city council, which controls the market trade.
Presumably, the name of the market comes from the Spanish word "el rastro", which translates as "trace". Once there was a slaughterhouse near the market, and when the slaughtered cattle were transported along the street, there was often a trail of blood.
The huge number of retail outlets in the Rastro market offers customers the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of products. All sorts of trinkets, books, magazines, jewelry, clothes, national costumes, matador costumes, expensive furniture, dishes and, of course, various souvenirs are sold here. There are also many antique shops where you can find amazing antiques.
The Rastro market is open on weekends and holidays from 9-00 to 15-00. The greatest revival of trade reaches around 11 o'clock.
