Description of the attraction
The Church of St. Nicholas, also known as the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, is a medieval Orthodox church located in the village of Slokoshitsa, on the left bank of the Slokoska River. It was built in the 16th century from stone, red brick and mortar that holds it together. It is a small (7x5 meters) one-nave building with a semicircular extension - an apse. Initially, the temple had a semi-cylindrical roof, but later it was replaced by a gable triangular roof, the outer edges of which protrude far beyond the walls of the building.
During the restoration of the temple, traces of several layers of paint from the late Middle Ages of the 16th-17th centuries were found. and Liberation. In 1886, work was carried out here to restore the church building. The painter Evstafiy Popdimitrov from the village of Osoy (now the territory of the Republic of Macedonia) decorated the walls of the church with frescoes. Above the entrance, he depicted the patron saint of the temple - St. Nicholas, below there is an inscription in two lines, dated 1886, and on the sides - images of the archangels Michael and Gabriel.
Initially, the church bore the name of St. George, but after the icon of St. Nicholas was found here in 1886, it was renamed. The name has remained unchanged to this day.
