Description of the attraction

The first Luxembourg City Theater was opened in 1869 in the building of the old Capuchin monastery, for a long time it remained the only theater in the city. By the end of 1958, a decision was made to build a new spacious building for the theater, and the Luxembourg city authorities announced a competition for the best project, the winner of which was the famous Parisian architect Alain Bourbonnet. Construction began in the fall of 1959, and the inauguration of the New Theater in Luxembourg took place in April 1964. Subsequently, it was renamed the City Theater of Luxembourg, and already in 2003 it received its current name - the Grand Theater of Luxembourg.

Over time, the need to modernize the building in accordance with existing norms and requirements for such structures, including from a safety point of view, became obvious. The work on bringing the technical characteristics of the building to the established standards and equipping it with modern equipment was supervised by highly qualified German specialists - Kurt Gerling and Werner Arendt. The architectural appearance of the original building has remained unchanged.

Today the Bolshoi Theater of Luxembourg is rightfully considered one of the best theaters in Europe, and its program is famous for its diversity - it is opera, various theatrical and dance performances, as well as concerts, festivals, etc. In recent years, the theater has actively collaborated with the English National Opera, the London Barbican Center, the National Theater of Great Britain, the German Theater, the Teatro Royal de La Monnaie (Brussels), The Wooster Group (New York) and the Comique Opera (Paris). The Bolshoi Theater of Luxembourg also visited the Netherlands Dance Theater and the collectives of Anna Teresa De Keersmaker and Michael Clarke.

Twice in 1973 and 1984 the theater hosted the popular international pop song contest - Eurovision, and in 2007 the premiere of the famous opera by Jonathan Harvey - Wagner's Dream - took place at the Bolshoi Theater.
