Description of the attraction

Podersdorf is an Austrian city located on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedler in Burgenland. The city is a tourist center. People come here for recreation on the lake, birdwatching (the city is part of the Neusiedlersee National Park), outdoor activities on bicycles along special popular routes.

Podersdorf has many sports clubs: an equestrian, tennis, squash club, several yacht clubs, three sailing schools, two windsurfing schools, three kite schools, a darts club and a sport fishing center. For tourists there are several campgrounds, a hotel, as well as fish restaurants, taverns and bars. In the city you can taste Italian and Hungarian cuisine.

Throughout its history, the city has suffered many hardships. In the 18th century, a plague raged in Podersdorf. The 19th century brought famine and poverty caused by the Napoleonic Wars, several cholera epidemics and the drying up of Lake Neusiedler. In the middle of the 19th century, a school, a windmill and a church were built.

Historically, fishing has been an important industry for the city. In the 19th century, the population increased, many pastures were converted into agricultural land. Winemaking developed rapidly. After World War II, Podersdorf, like the rest of Burgenland, was in the zone of Soviet occupation until 1955.

For curious guests of the city, the original lighthouse on the lakeside and windmills will be interesting. The late Baroque city church was built in 1791.
