Description of the attraction
Nestled among the hills, the city is very picturesque. Its original necklace is the wide Mahaveli River. There is an artificial lake in the city center. A special attraction of Kandy is the Dalada Maligawa temple, deeply revered by tourists, where the "Sacred Tooth" of the Buddha is kept, once snatched by one of the disciples from the funeral pyre of the Buddha, and then brought to Sri Lanka by a princess.
In late July - early August, Kandy hosts an annual ten-day carnival processions with many elephants, torch-bearers, musicians and dancers. This is the only period of the year when a sacred relic leaves its temple - on a richly decorated elephant. This is an unforgettable sight for all who visit Sri Lanka at this time. 4 km from Kandy is the Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya, which is one of the largest in Asia. A huge number of tropical plants, rare species of palm trees, more than 1000 species of orchids and a landmark of the garden - a huge umbrella tree - grow here.
