Description of the attraction
The Theater Museum in Athens was founded in 1938 by the Society of Greek Playwrights. The famous Greek historian Yiannis Sideris, who specializes in the history of the development of the theatrical art in Greece, was appointed the head of the museum. In 1976, the Greek playwright Manolis Kores took over as head of the museum.
Since 1977, the theater museum has been housed in the basement of the Cultural Center of Athens. On the basis of the museum, there is also a training and research center for the Greek theater.
The exposition of the Theater Museum is divided according to themes: modern Greek theater, opera, musical theater and variety shows, ancient Greek drama and puppet theater. Here you can see stage costumes and props, theatrical scenery, personal belongings of the leading figures of the Greek theater, scripts, photographs, posters and programs of the 19th and 20th centuries, and much more.
In addition to the exhibits, the museum has its own library, which contains about 25,000 volumes of specialized literature and archives, including unique old manuscripts of the 18th century, biographies of famous actors and various publications (criticism, interviews, reviews, articles about the theater, etc.), and also an awesome collection of videos.
The collection of the Theater Museum perfectly illustrates the history of the development of the Greek theater and has a high artistic and historical value.
