Description of the attraction
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is one of the most interesting sights of the city of Burgas. It is located in the very center of the city and is the largest temple in Burgas. Its construction began in 1895, and in 1907 it opened its doors to Orthodox parishioners, whose donations made the construction possible. The famous Italian architect Riccardo Toscani worked on the project.
The area of the building is 516 square meters (32 meters long and 21 meters wide), two bell towers are adjacent to it. The main entrance to the temple is decorated with a mosaic panel depicting Saints Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the Slavic alphabet. The church building is also notable for its richly decorated facade and a stunningly beautiful dome. The interior of the church can also interest the visitor: it is decorated with malachite, marble and bizarre frescoes created by the craftsmen who worked on the decoration of the Alexander Nevsky Church in Sofia. Here you can also see the carved iconostasis made of wood by the master Kruma Kosharevsky (1930).
After a fire in 1953, the decoration of the temple and many icons were damaged, but to date, lengthy restoration work has already been completed and the temple has been open to visitors for more than 15 years.
