Description of the attraction
The Hermitage is a section of forest along the banks of the Bran River in the town of Dunkeld in Scotland. This is a great hiking area, created back in the 18th century by the Duke of Atol. On his behalf, many species of plants that are not found in these places were brought here and planted. The park has an old stone bridge (1770), near which the Lebanese cedar grows - the oldest tree in the park. Ossiana's Cave is an artificial grotto built in 1760 for one of the Earls of Bredalbane when he decided to become a hermit.
One of the paths leads to Black Lynn Falls. There is a small pavilion above the waterfall, which was originally built, in 1757, just as a kind of pavilion. However, in 1783, the pavilion was redesigned and decorated as the tomb of Ossian, a famous bard who lived in the 3rd century. The room, which overlooks the waterfall, was decorated with mirrors so that the water reflected in them from a variety of angles. The poet William Wordsworth describes this room in his World of Wonders. At the beginning of the 19th century, the hall of mirrors was additionally decorated with moss and small flower beds.
In 1869, vandals broke some of the mirrors, and places gradually began to decline. In the middle of the 20th century, this piece of land was transferred by the Duchess of Atoll to the National Trust of Scotland. The pavilion has been restored, but the mirror optical illusion effect has not been restored.
