Description of the attraction
The Historical Museum in Burgas is considered the largest museum complex in Southeast Bulgaria. It was founded in 1912 as a city private museum owned by the archaeological society. At the head was a group of intellectuals and enthusiasts who wanted to study the history of the Burgas land. Over the next 30 years, the archaeological society presented the first exhibitions with unique archaeological and ethnographic values.
Since 1946, they donated the collected collections to the city museum, which was renamed the National Museum of Burgas. The new director of the museum, a young archaeologist and scientist Ivan Galabov, became the founder of modern museum work and archeology in Burgas. Subsequently, he became a professor at the University of Cyril and Methodius, as well as the universities of Vienna and Salzburg.
Since 1953, the museum was called a district museum, and later received the status of a cultural heritage site.
The main expositions of the museum are exhibitions on the themes: the historical development of Burgas and the Burgas region during the period of the National Renaissance, the struggle to preserve the Orthodox faith and independence during the Ottoman yoke. Particular attention is paid to the military glory of Bulgaria, documents and photographs of the period of wars and uprisings are presented.
