Description of the attraction

The Viking Age Ship Museum in Roskilde is a Danish national museum where you can learn more about the history and structure of ships, navigation, shipbuilding, used both in prehistoric times and in the Middle Ages.

In 1070, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk in Roskilde Fjord in order to block the most important shipping channel and protect Roskilde from enemy attacks from the sea. These five ships were named Skuldel ships, in 1962 they were raised from the depths of the sea. It turned out that these five ships belonged to completely different classes of ships, from cargo to military.

The Viking Age Ship Museum was created in 1969 specifically to showcase the Roskilde Fjord and present the five ships found. In the late 1990s, the museum expanded thanks to new finds: 9 more ships were discovered, among which was the longest Viking warship that scientists have ever found, reaching 36 meters in length.

In the museum's workshop, visitors can watch the work of skilled craftsmen recreating replicas of prehistoric ships. In the archaeological workshop, you can see how the finds are stored and studied. In summer, children and adults can enjoy many fun outdoor activities.

The museum with many departments and artifacts revealing the Viking era, their life, their art of conquering the seas, has become, along with the Cathedral of Roskilde, one of the most popular attractions in the city.
