Description of the attraction
The Clock Tower is one of the dominant features of Ulcinj, along with the minarets of six mosques, and one of the main local historical monuments. It was built in 1754, during the Turkish rule, from rough stone with funds collected by local residents. After all, the majority of the local population did not have their own watches, so they were very interested in the appearance of a common chronometer. The clock mechanism, installed on the tower, gave a signal about the beginning of the working day and its end, and also called for namaz. Thus, the Turkish clock tower is still a reminder of the times of the Ottoman rule in these places.
The place for the location of the Clock Tower was chosen very convenient: the ringing of the bells of its clock could be heard anywhere in the city. Not far from the Clock Tower there are two large Ultsin mosques: Namazgzhau and Kriepazari, so local residents living near the tower could go about their business to the last without fear of being late for prayer.
Before the appearance of the tower in Ulcinj, which the Turks called Sahat Kula, the time was counted by a chronometer placed on the tower of the local castle. This structure was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1854.
A special person, who can be called a caretaker, takes care of the accuracy of the alarm clock on the clock tower. He has the key to the tower at his disposal.
In 2004, the city of Ulcinj solemnly celebrated the 250th anniversary of the construction of the clock tower. Nowadays, not a single tourist passes by this cultural and historical monument of the city.
