Description of the attraction
The Vuoksa river flowing within the city, which originates in Lake Saimaa and flows into Ladoga, forms numerous rapids and a powerful Imatrankoski waterfall. Once this waterfall was called "Finnish Niagara" and in 1772 the Russian Empress Catherine II admired it.
Previously, a grandiose natural phenomenon could be observed in its natural form, but after the construction of a hydroelectric power station in 1929, the Imatra Falls turned into a tourist attraction. Free fall of water into the canyon is carried out by the hour: from June 8 to August 25, daily at 19.00, on Sunday at 15.00. In August, a special show is organized when a raft with a huge bonfire is launched downstream of the waterfall. On New Year's Eve, Sylvester's performance is staged: a waterfall "turns on", fireworks thunder and sparkle. The canyon itself, strewn with granite boulders, looks impressive at any time of the year.
Imatra Falls is surrounded by Kruununpuisto Park, the oldest nature reserve in Finland.
