Description of the attraction
The Art Museum in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the building of one of the most beautiful and remarkable architectural monuments of Ivano-Frankivsk - a parish church, erected at the end of the 19th century.
This temple was originally erected as the family tomb of the Potocki family, Polish gentry who ruled the city at that time. Many trials awaited the cathedral - so, in the 19th century, it was significantly damaged during a fire, during the Soviet Union it was closed, destroying the bell tower. However, later, during the global reconstruction of the Market Square, the church was also restored. And in 1980, the Art Museum was opened in the premises of the church.
Ivanofrankivsk Art Museum is deservedly called a treasury, because it contains one of the richest collections of folk and fine art of the Carpathian region. A separate collection is made up of ancient icons. No less remarkable is the collection of works by the great Ukrainian sculptor Johann Pinzel. It also contains a very extensive collection of paintings of the 18th - 20th centuries, which belong to the brushes of famous Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian, German and Italian painters. Here you can also admire the collection of old books, works of folk artists, a collection of modern graphics.
