Description of the attraction
Porto Rafti, or Limani-Mesogion (Port of Mesogion), is one of the most beautiful seaside towns on the east coast of Attica, located in the plain east of Mount Imitos (Gimet). Porto Rafti is located 38 km from the capital of Greece and in close proximity to the new Athens International Airport.
The city is surrounded by two hills that isolate it from the rest of Attica and protect it from strong winds. The climate resembles the islands of the Aegean Sea with relatively mild winters and hot dry summers.
A series of archaeological finds indicate the presence of humans in the area since at least the Early Bronze Age (2600-1800 BC). In ancient times and until the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city's port was an important trading point in the region. This port is also known as the site of the evacuation of the Allied forces after the German invasion of Greece in late April 1941.
Despite the fact that the town is small, and its population, according to the 2001 census, is only 7131 people, Porto Rafti has a school, gymnasium, lyceum, post office and at least five churches (Agia Marina, Church of the Prophet Elijah, Spas- Transfiguration Cathedral, etc.). Porto Rafti has two nautical clubs as well as a football and basketball team.
Not far from Porto Rafti are the ruins of the ancient settlement of Bravrona and its main attraction - the remains of the ancient Greek temple of Artemis (5th century BC). There is also a museum that contains finds from the Sanctuary of Artemis.
While in Porto Rafti, you should definitely visit the southernmost point of Attica, Cape Sounion and the ruins of the ancient temple of Poseidon located here.
The resort town is known for its beautiful sandy beaches with clear waters, restaurants and taverns serving traditional Greek cuisine. Porto Rafti also has a good selection of comfortable hotels and apartments. This place is also attractive for thousands of residents of the capital who have their country houses here. The close location of Porto Rafti to the capital of Greece will make your vacation interesting and informative.
