Description of the attraction
The Leventis City History Museum is located in one of the buildings that the famous art patron and art lover John Evangelides built in 1882 for his three daughters. Later this building was turned into a hospital, but over time it was abandoned. In 1983, it was bought and restored by the A. G. Leventis specially for placing in it the collections of the museum of the history of the city. Officially, the City Museum, named after the founder of the foundation, has been operating since 1989. Since 2000, it has been constantly expanding, so at the moment the institution already occupies several buildings.
The City Museum is the owner of a truly huge collection, which is completely devoted to the history of Cyprus and especially Nicosia. Initially, it consisted of only 300 items, however, over time, thanks to the help of public organizations and patrons, the current collection of the museum has more than 10 thousand unique and valuable items, thanks to which you can trace almost the entire history of this island. These are works of art, clothing, books, manuscripts, jewelry, weapons, household items, and much more. The age of the exhibits is very diverse, some of them date back to 3900 BC. However, special attention in the museum is paid to contemporary history.
The museum is quite famous and popular among local and foreign tourists, and in 1991 it was even awarded the “Best European Museum” prize by the Council of Europe. He received this award for the most modern and daring design of his exposition.
