Description of the attraction
The Historical Museum in Kavarna received city status in 1971. Initially, the first exhibitions were housed in the library building in the city center.
After the Liberation, the museum business here began to develop with renewed vigor. The 1906 report of the Archaeological Society of Varna also mentions the names of Kavarna museum figures. On November 14, 1956, the official approval of the fund of the Kavarna Museum took place, and Ivan Rafilov was appointed the first head. By 1974, he had amassed a small archaeological collection that was housed at the headquarters of the local tourism community, Kaliakra.
In 2003, the museum moved to a building specially built for it. A small exhibition area presents various exhibits discovered in the territory of the Kavarna region. In addition, in the complex you can see a collection of photographs, which gives an idea of the appearance of the city from the 19th century. Old books, images and weapons collected in the museum are evidence of the difficult fate of the inhabitants of Kavarna, their struggle for freedom and independence. A special place is occupied by an exposition dedicated to the history of the Chirakman settlement - the ancient and medieval predecessor of the modern city.
In 2007, a new building was given to the museum, which housed temporary exhibitions. Here visitors can see old maps and engravings, the latest finds from the ancient fortress of Kaliakra, etc.
Exhibits of the city museum, including a model of a prehistoric cave settlement, tools, tools, weapons, household items, jewelry, textiles, clothing, etc., tell about the thousand-year history of Kavarna - from ancient times to the present day.
