Description of the attraction

Obidos is a medieval walled town famous for its many churches and intricate narrow streets lined with beautiful white houses with red tiled roofs. Getting into this city, which is located on the top of a hill and is surrounded by a fortress wall of the XIV century, one gets the impression that you have returned to the past. You should definitely pay attention to the museums of this city, among which is the municipal museum located near the Church of Santa Maria.

The Obidos Municipal Museum was opened in 1970 with the assistance of the Calouste Gulbekyan Foundation and is located in the 16th century building, which previously housed the city's court and prison. This museum contains a collection of works of religious art, including sculptures and paintings. Also in the museum you can see an amazing and valuable collection of French and English weapons of the Napoleonic era, interior items in the Baroque style. Also, visitors will be interested to look at the objects of the Romanesque period, found during excavations, and various architectural fragments. The museum is famous for the fact that it exhibits one of the paintings of the famous Portuguese artist Joseph de Obidos. Josefa de Obidos was born in Spain, but her family later moved to Portugal. At birth, her name was Joseph de Ayalla, but she most often signed her works as Joseph Obidos. She was one of the few European female painters to actively paint during the Baroque era. The works of this artist adorn many temples in Portugal.
