Description of the attraction

One of the few national reserves located within the city is this relatively small (5 sq km), but well-planned and well-populated park. The Gaborone Nature Reserve is located in close proximity to the center of the capital of Botswana. It was created in 1988 with the aim of clarifying information about the animals living in the surrounding area. Although much smaller than most national parks in Botswana, it is the third busiest nature reserve in the country.

Gaborone National Reserve is a popular birdwatching destination. A wide variety of habitats, which range from thorny shrubs and woodlands to the coastal forest and swamp, has resulted in a varied list of species in the reserve, including the Red Book snake eagle, the red-breasted shrike-bubu. In addition, the reserve is a habitat for migratory waterbirds, many woody waders, flocks of white-faced ducks, snipe, corncrake, etc.

In addition to birds in the Gabarone Nature Reserve, you can see impalas, kudu, ostriches, wildebeests, zebras, gemsboks, and a couple of rhinos. It is home to a number of Botswana's indigenous animal species, including zebras, eland antelopes, vervettes, warthogs, and numerous migratory and migratory bird species, best viewed from a small dam in the park.

The park has a good network of roads for easy observation of animals and birds. There is an educational center, a number of picnic areas, a play area and a few distant areas to watch the life of the marsh birds. A detailed map with indicated routes through the park can be obtained at the entrance gate on the west side of the city. The reserve is a popular weekend getaway and picnic spot. It is possible to pre-book excursion tours for schoolchildren and visitors.
