Description of the attraction
In the Bulgarian city of Asenovgrad, you can admire the local landmark - the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was built in 1853. As historians note, the desire of the Bulgarians to have at their disposal an Orthodox church, in which divine services would be conducted in their native Bulgarian language, is connected with its construction. In this regard, great hopes were pinned on the Church of the Holy Trinity: a lot of effort and money was spent on its construction. But, unfortunately, the temple remained in the hands of the Greeks until the beginning of the 20th century.
The church is a fairly large structure - a basilica with three domes on the roof and a pentahedral apse. A snow-white bell tower rises above the massive stone porch at the western entrance. It was built on in 1938 according to the project of the architect Boyan Chinkov. In terms of its architectural plan, the building, as a whole, is very similar to another city basilica - the Church of St. George. Two rows of six columns each with exquisite capitals divide the space of the temple into three naves.
From 1853 to 1857, Greek painters (at that time the temple belonged to the Greeks) painted icons for the new church. On the right side of the iconostasis there is an icon of Jesus Christ, on the left - the icon of the Holy Mother of God. In 1866, the works of such masters of icon painting as G. Ksafa, S. Andonov and others appeared here.
For the residents of Asenovgrad, the Church of the Holy Trinity is of great importance not only because it is an architectural and historical monument, but also because this building once housed the first Bulgarian school in the city.
