Description of the attraction
The picturesque island of Hydra, lying in the Saronic Gulf, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece. A fascinating history, a lot of interesting places, as well as magnificent natural landscapes attract a huge number of tourists here every year.
One of the main and, perhaps, the most interesting sights of the island of Hydra is the nunnery of Saint Eupraxia. The temple is located in an amazingly beautiful place among pines and cypresses on the slope of Mount Eros (588 m), at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level.
The monastery of Saint Eupraxia was built in the 19th century. This is a small, cozy complex, the main catholicon of which is distinguished by a fairly simple architecture. The pacifying atmosphere prevailing in the monastery will allow you to escape from the bustle of the world and enjoy the peace and quiet. The road to the monastery winds up the side of the mountain and offers truly breathtaking scenery. The walk will take approximately 40-45 minutes. True, you can make a fascinating journey on donkeys - a very popular transport on the island.
Today, only a few nuns live on the territory of the monastery of St. Eupraxia. Within the walls of the monastery, they organized a small embroidery workshop, where you can buy magnificent handicrafts as a souvenir.
A walk through the picturesque surroundings of the monastery will bring you a lot of pleasure, and climbing to the top of Eros, you can enjoy the stunning beauty of the panoramic views of Hydra itself and other islands of the Saronic Gulf. Another Orthodox shrine of the island - the monastery of the Prophet Elijah - is definitely worth a visit.
