Description of the attraction

The main harbor - Skala is located 3-4 km from the capital of the island Patmos Chora. The picturesque resort town is located in the central part of the island and is the most densely populated and developed area of Patmos.

Modern Skala is a fairly young town. It began to develop in the 19th century around an excellent natural harbor. Previously, it was quite dangerous due to the frequent raids of pirates and other conquerors, so the inhabitants preferred to settle in the depths of the island on inaccessible hills, equipping fortifications on the top. In the Middle Ages, the population of Patmos was mostly concentrated in the territory of modern Chora.

Today the port of Skala plays an important trade and economic role in the life of the island. The tourist infrastructure is also well developed here. In Skala you will find a fine selection of comfortable hotels and apartments, many different shops, excellent restaurants and taverns with excellent Greek cuisine. The city's nightlife is very active and varied with many nightclubs, discos and bars.

Among the most interesting sights of the Rock are the ruins of the ancient acropolis, the Church of St. Paraskeva, the Church of Panagia Kumana and the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. The magnificent Monastery of St. John the Evangelist and the famous Apocalypse cave in Chora are definitely worth a visit. Skala Port also organizes regular excursions to the surrounding islands.

Near the harbor there is a small but beautiful sandy beach with very convenient entry into the water, which is especially important if you are relaxing with children. There are trees along the beach that provide excellent natural shade, but there is also the option to rent sun umbrellas and sun loungers. There are also small cozy hotels near the beach. You can get to the remote beaches of the island by regular buses, car or boat.
