Description of the attraction

The Reichenbach Falls is located just two kilometers from the city of Meiringen, but you will have to get there by several means of transport. First you need to take a bus leaving from the bus station to the Willigen stop, and then use the cable car that takes tourists to a convenient observation deck located right above the waterfall. Those who are not looking for easy ways or just want to save a few francs can walk to the waterfall, guided by the special signs with the image of Sherlock Holmes.

The Reichenbach Falls, 250 meters high, consists of several cascades. The Upper Cascade, the most turbulent, was immortalized by Arthur Conan Doyle as the site of the death of the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. At the end of the 19th century, the author himself came to these places, accompanying his wife, who was being treated in Switzerland for tuberculosis. Subsequently, he decided to make the Reichenbach Falls the backdrop for the fight between Holmes and Moriarty. For many years on May 4, on the day of the death of Sherlock Holmes, thousands of fans of the works of Conan Doyle have gathered here. A plaque is fixed on the rock on the observation deck in memory of the detective who made this place famous.

The Reichenbach Falls is located on the Reichenbach stream, which is a tributary of the Are River. The width of the waterfall at the top is 40 meters. Downward, it expands three times. There is a funicular station near the upper cascade. The lower cascade can be clearly seen from the windows of the cable car. It is impossible to get close to the middle part of the waterfall.
