Description of the attraction
The Barbados Museum was established in 1933 and is located on the outskirts of the Savannah garrison in the parish of St. Michael. This building was once a two-story British military prison, built in 1817-1853, and since the 30s of the 20th century, the premises have been taken over by the Historical Society and the Museum. For the general public and guests of the city, objects of history and art from the long period of Barbados' existence are available.
The museum began as a historical society founded by Eustace Maxwell Shilston. The task of the scientists was "to study and keep records of the history of the island, its noble families and social activists, old houses, and other issues of interest to antiquaries in Barbados and abroad." The first temporary exhibition took place on June 23, 1933. Three months later, the building of a former military prison was assigned to the society on a 99-year lease.
In the 18th century, the Caribbean was the scene of numerous military conflicts, primarily between England and France, which fought for dominance in the region, so many fortresses, garrisons and military shipyards were built on the islands. At the end of the 19th century, England decided to reduce the number of its forces in the region. By 1906, the last British regiment left the island and many of the garrison buildings, including the military prison, were transferred to the government of Barbados.
In 1989, the capital work on the arrangement of the new administrative building of the museum, financed by the government, was completed. At the moment, several galleries of different directions are available for inspection.
The Warmington Gallery displays a collection of over 300 objects, including furniture, silver, ceramics, collected over four periods of the life of the Barbados planter. The Military Gallery will tell you about the development of the armed forces, changes in weapons, uniforms and other military attributes. It features exhibits from the 17th century to the end of the Second World War. Hall Al, dedicated to Historical Society benefactor Sally Al, hosts thematic exhibitions several times a year. An interactive children's gallery gives you the opportunity to feel like a character from another era - an Indian, an English or Zouave soldier, a prince or a sailor - here it is allowed not only to touch the exhibits, but also to try them on.
The next gallery is devoted to the development of the early peoples of Africa, trade in goods and their delivery routes, and their influence on the Caribbean. You will learn about four prominent African kingdoms and symbols of their power. The Jubilee Hall tells the story of the shared history of mankind and Barbados, in particular, over 4000 years. Exposition to them. Sir Edward Cunard has an extensive collection of paintings, lithographs, drawings on a variety of topics. Harwood Gallery invites you to learn about the ecology of coral reefs, mangrove swamps and algae, the fishing industry, turtles and their conservation. The emphasis is on improving knowledge of the natural environment of Barbados.
The Museum of Barbados and the Historical Community is open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00, on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, there is a gift shop and a huge library nearby.
