Description of the attraction

The Byzantine fortress Theodosiopolis, founded in eastern Anatolia in the fourth century, has played a key role in the history of the Turkish state at all times. The Turks, after they conquered Theodosiopolis, renamed the city and it became known as Erzurum.

The Clock Tower (also called the former Tepsi Minaret) is the oldest building in Erzurum. At first, the minaret played the role of an observation tower. It was built at the beginning of the twelfth century. The tower was made a sentry already in Ottoman times. Despite the fact that the clock mechanism was stopped by time, the clock tower still remains an architectural monument. This watch was once presented by Queen Victoria herself.

The Clock Tower is one of the highest points not only in the fortress, but in the entire city. It offers a beautiful view of the valley and the city. The architectural style of the tower does not at all harmonize with the rest of the fortress, since they were built in different eras.

You can climb it via a spiral staircase that runs inside.
