Description of the attraction
The Strozzi Tower, located in the vicinity of Perugia on the Strada Perlaska road, is today a kind of exhibition area. This is a unique place that combines history, art and nature. The tower, run by the Center for the Arts, regularly hosts regional and national cultural events - exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, graphics, sculptures, etc.
The name of the tower comes from the name of Giovanni Battista Strozia, Duke of Bagnolo and Duke of Forano, who according to historical records in 1715 was the owner of a plot of land with a small vineyard and a tower, located near Pieve San Quirico. However, today mentions of Torre Strozia, dated to the end of the 16th century, have already been discovered, although its original origin is still unknown. Considering the architecture of the tower and its construction, it can be assumed that it served as a separate military outpost. This is also indicated by its strategic location between the Tiber River, the cities of Gubbio, Perugia and Citta di Castello and Tuscany. It is also possible that it was a haven for the Zokkolanti religious community, and then turned into a dovecote.
Despite its appalling condition and dilapidated structure, Strozzi Tower has been completely restored by its current owner and, in keeping with its historical and artistic features, has been transformed into one of the largest centers of contemporary art in Umbria.
