Description of the attraction
The city's least known Gothic church of Saints Peter and Paul is located, however, in the most attractive place in Wrocław, where thousands of tourists visit every day. Near the church there is the famous Tumski Bridge and the Baroque building of the former home for orphans of noble birth, which was previously called Orphanotropheum. With its facade the church faces the Cathedral Street, and the wall of its presbytery adjoins one of the buildings of the Orphanotropheum, the premises of which are currently occupied by an educational institution, a radio station called "Family" and some church services. By the way, the church and the building of the former orphanage were connected by a covered walkway in 1927.
The church of Saints Peter and Paul was built of red brick in the Gothic style from 1404, in which the presbytery was erected, until 1454, when the nave was completely completed.
This temple has experienced fires many times, but was constantly rebuilt. The first major destruction by fire occurred in 1634, the second - in 1791. During the renovation, the building of the temple was slightly changed, its facade was given baroque features and the internal space of the church was reconstructed.
In 1813 the church was turned into a hospital for captured French soldiers. Since at that time no one monitored the safety of church utensils and sacred objects, it is not surprising that after the end of the Napoleonic wars, the church was in a deplorable state. It was renovated again in 1884. At the same time, its appearance acquired the features of the Gothic Revival.
In 1945, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul also suffered from the hostilities in Wroclaw. His roof was completely destroyed. The Poles restored it in 1952-1953 and reopened the church for believers.
Near the temple you can see a sculpture depicting St. Peter. It was moved here from the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Pyasek.
