Description of the attraction
The Katzunghaus House is one of the most famous landmarks in Innsbruck. It is located in the Old Town, on Duke Friedrich's Street, a popular tourist destination. Near it are other famous buildings of Innsbruck - the Rococo masterpiece Helblinghaus and the so-called House with a Golden Roof.
This house was first mentioned back in 1450, and it was most likely built even earlier. However, it was heavily rebuilt in the course of careful restorations in the middle of the 20th century, and therefore many elements of its structure were made, albeit in accordance with the principles of Gothic architecture, but already in a more modern neo-Gothic style.
The house consists of four floors and is especially famous for its graceful bay windows - protruding windows. All these windows are decorated with graceful bas-reliefs that depict typical scenes from city life - knights' tournaments, minstrels and musicians, weddings, peasant festivities and much more. These reliefs were made in 1530 by the same craftsman who also worked on the famous Golden Roof that adorns the neighboring house on Duke Friedrich Street. Such plots, by the way, were not chosen by chance, since the house overlooked one of the main city squares, where the main celebrations took place, including knightly tournaments and various festivities. It is worth noting, however, that the bas-reliefs presented at the moment are a skillfully made copy of 1862.
Since 1775, the Katzunghaus house was owned by the famous baker family by the name of Katzung, who gave the house its name. One of the Katzungs served as the personal baker of Archduchess Maria Elizabeth at the end of the 18th century. Unfortunately, the last representative of this genus died in 2000, but the new owners continue to honor the old traditions. For example, the café-bakery on the ground floor is still operating, and on the second floor there is a baroque reception hall that can be rented for the evening.
