Description of the attraction
St. Wojciech Church is one of the oldest Gothic churches in the Polish city of Wroclaw. Initially, a Romanesque church was built on this site, founded by order of Boguslav, which was consecrated in 1112 by Bishop Ziroslav. During the Mongol invasion in 1241, the church, like the entire left-bank part of the city, was destroyed. In 1250, the reconstruction of the church began.
Over the next centuries, the church was rebuilt several times. In 1715-1730, the construction of the Baroque chapel of the Blessed Czeslaw was carried out, where the alabaster coffin with his relics was placed. The sculptural decorations were by Georg Leonard Weber and the paintings by Johann Jakub Ebelweiser and Franz de Bakker.
In 1810, this Dominican church was converted into a parish church, and the monastery buildings, used as warehouses for almost 90 years, were demolished in 1900. Of all the buildings of the monastery, only the refectory was left.
During the Second World War, the church was badly damaged. The first stage of reconstruction under the direction of George Rzhepeka was carried out in 1953-1955. In the 70s, new stained glass windows were created for the church.
Fundraising is currently underway to restore the roof and bell tower of St. Wojciech's Church.
