Description of the attraction
The city of military glory is one of the honorary titles of the Russian Federation, which can be awarded to certain cities for "fortitude, mass heroism, courage shown by the defenders of the city in a just war for independence and freedom of the Fatherland."
On July 22, 2010 the ceremonial opening of the stele called "Pskov - the city of military glory" took place, which took place on the city Victory Square. This important ceremony was attended by the leaders of the city and region, military, veterans, children and priests. At the important opening for all the invited veterans, a special tribune was set up, where they were escorted by schoolchildren, as well as by the pupils of the Patriot club. To the honor and respect of the veterans, most of them did not need help. At this time, an extraordinary heat reigned in Pskov, which turned the solemn ceremony into a real test. But, despite the difficulties, a considerable number of people came to see the ceremony. The ceremony began with a theatrical address to all those present, as well as the glorification of the great city of Pskov with important and historically significant characters, among which are Prince Alexander Nevsky, Peter the Great, Princess Olga, and Prince Dovmont.
Right in front of the tribune, a short-lived demonstration battle took place among the warriors-reenactors. After some time, the residents of the city of Pskov were reminded of the events of the Great Patriotic War, as well as the incredible feat of the sixth company. Shortly thereafter, the active paratroopers made a demonstration performance.
The respected and honorable right to be the first to open the stele, cutting the ribbon at the same time, was given to Andrey Turchak - the governor of the Pskov region, Evgeny Lukyanov - the plenipotentiary representative of the president with the SFZO, Ivan Tsetsersky - the head of the city of Pskov, Sergey Pavlov - a participant in the Great Patriotic War, Igor Vinogradsky commander of the 76th division, as well as Father Eusebius - Metropolitan of Velikie Luki and Pskov. After the grand opening, each of the invited guests congratulated the residents of the city on such a significant day.
The very first ceremony of awarding certificates of honor conferring the respectable title "City of Military Glory" took place on May 7, 2007. At that time, the heads of the administrations of Orel, Kursk and Belgorod received their certificates. In the autumn of the same year, the current President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin in the Catherine Hall of the famous Moscow Kremlin presented five more certificates to the mayors of their cities on conferring this honorary title. In the fall of 2009, in the city of Dmitrov, the grand opening of the very first commemorative arrow in Russia under the same name "City of Military Glory" took place. From March 2010 to November 2011, the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev signed important decrees and conferring the title on the cities of Russia participating in the defense of our Fatherland, as well as its preservation throughout the long history of the development and formation of the Russian state.
As for the architectural and sculptural design of the memorial stele "City of Military Glory", it was officially approved by the Committee for Organizational Affairs "Victory" in the course of an open all-Russian competition.
The memorial stele is a Doric column, crowned with the coat of arms of the Russian Federation, and installed on a pedestal in the central part of the square square. The cartouche with the presidential decree is located on the front of the stele, and on the back there is an image of the city coat of arms. Sculptural bas-reliefs depicting the events in connection with which the city received the title of "City of Military Glory" are exhibited in all corners of the square.
Since 2011, the Bank of Russia began to issue coins of the same name series, which are made of steel with a galvanized brass coating.
