Description of the attraction
Filicudi is one of the islands of the Lipari archipelago, located between the islands of Alicudi and Salina. Administratively it belongs to the Lipari commune. On Filicudi, covering an area of 9, 5 sq. km., there are several villages - Filicudi, Porto, Rocca di Chauli, Pecorini and Val di Chiesa. The population of the island is engaged in fishing and agriculture - grapes, olives, grains and vegetables are grown here. In addition, tourism plays a significant role in the local economy, since since 1997 most of the island (7 square kilometers) has been declared a protected area - today nature lovers come here. From the natural attractions of Filicudi, one can name Monte Fossa Velchi - the highest peak of the island (774 m), the La Canna cliff with a height of only 85 m located off the coast and the dormant volcanoes of Montagnola and Torrione. Noteworthy are the numerous sea caves and grottoes, the most famous of which is Bue Marino.
Filicudi, whose name comes from the distorted Greek word "Phoenician", was inhabited in the Neolithic about 5 thousand years ago. Then, in the Bronze Age, new people came to the island, who were later replaced by the ancient Greeks. Preserved on the island and traces of the presence of the Romans and Byzantines. And in the 1970s Filicudi was "discovered" by people of art - its first "preachers" were photographers and artists like Sergio Libizhevsky, Ettore Sottsas, Roland Zoss and Einaudi. Through their efforts, the island has become the focus of international tourism.
Despite this, Filicudi is still considered a "lost" island, a place of seclusion and relaxation - even among the residents of neighboring Lipari. The best time to visit the island is in spring, when flowers bloom and the entire surrounding land is painted in millions of shades. It is during this time of the year that it is best to go hiking along the ancient trails that run throughout the island. Usually the route starts from the port located in the north of Filicudi, where boats arrive. There are also shops, ATM, boat rental, etc. From there you can go to Val di Chiesa or to the prehistoric village of Pecorini with a small pier, several colorful houses and a beautiful beach - it is located at Cape Graziano. It was on this cape that some archaeological finds were made. Pecorini is home to only about 500 people, and around the village are lemon groves and lush Mediterranean bushes.
