Description of the attraction
One of the landmarks of the city of Zhitomir is the Postal Station, which is located on Pobedy Avenue, 72. The complex of buildings of the 19th century includes: the main building, a stable and a hotel wing, which were surrounded by a fence. The famous Ukrainian poet and writer TG Shevchenko stayed here in 1846. The post station was located on the northwestern outskirts of the city from the side of the city of Novograd-Volynsky.
In 1827, the postal service of the Russian Empire organized a regular movement of stagecoaches between St. Petersburg, Kiev and Radivilov (border with Austria-Hungary), for this, post stations were erected according to a typical architectural design. These were one-story buildings with elongated and lancet windows, made in the neo-Gothic style. All these post stations were divided into classes I-IV. Each of them was at a distance of about 18 kilometers from each other. In total, more than 4 thousand of them were built. At each such station there was a small hotel, a stable, a coach house and a coach house.
At the end of the 19th century, telegraph communications were laid along the main roads, after which the stations became post and telegraph stations. Some of them survived on the territory of Zhytomyr, Kiev, Volyn and Rivne regions. Today, the former post-station buildings house roadside cafes, shops and other establishments, in some cases post offices and bus stations.
For many decades, the Zhytomyr post station regularly performed its functions and at one time it even got on the pages of the story "Exam for rank", which belongs to the outstanding writer and playwright A. P. Chekhov.
Today the post station of the city of Zhitomir is an architectural monument of national importance, which has survived to this day.
