Description of the attraction

This is the newest of the capital's museums. Unlike all others located in old mansions or former palaces, the Museum of Modern Art is also located in a modern building, built in 1984-1989. This is the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest buildings on earth, second only to the Pentagon in size. For guests of Bucharest, the incentive to visit the museum is largely due to the fact that it is located in an incredible and iconic palace for the country. This grand creation by former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu is itself an example of contemporary art. The eleven-storey building consists of 1,100 rooms, about 30 of them are halls for celebrations and concert halls. The luxuriously decorated Palace of Parliament now houses the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Since 2004, two museums have been opened in the western wing of the palace - the National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Socialist Realism Totalitarianism.

The west wing previously served as the Ceausescu family's private apartments, where the bathroom alone was over 200 square meters and the boudoir was three times larger. For the opening of the museum, a significant amount of work was done to adapt these premises to exhibition spaces. Currently, the museum occupies several floors, where works of contemporary Romanian painters are presented and exhibitions of foreign artists are held. In addition to paintings and graphics, installations, video art and other exhibits representing a variety of types of contemporary art are on display. By world museum standards, the collection is not yet large, but for Romanian art, which for many still remains a "blank spot", the emergence of a platform that provides an opportunity for dialogue with the viewer is a movement forward.
