Description of the attraction
Graben is a pedestrian zone in the center of Vienna, an area of the most fashionable shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafes, antique and second-hand bookshops.
In the center of the square rises the Baroque Plague Column, also called the Trinity Column. It was erected by order of Emperor Leopold I after the end of a long-term plague epidemic at the end of the 17th century. At the top of the column are statues depicting the Emperor praying to the Holy Trinity.
There are two buildings here, designed by the famous architect Otto Wagner - the early works of the classic Viennese Art Nouveau: the house of the insurance company Anker and the pompous house Graben-Hof. The Jewish Museum and the Dorotheum Auction House are nearby.
Near the cathedral of St. Stefan's house was built in 1985-1990. This glass and aluminum Art Nouveau house is one of the most controversial structures in the city center.
