Description of the attraction
Naples Cathedral, dedicated to the heavenly patron of the city, the most popular St. Januarius, was founded in the XIII century, at the behest of Charles II of Anjou, on the site of the previous buildings and was rebuilt more than once in subsequent centuries. This is reminiscent of the neo-Gothic facade of the cathedral, executed in 1877 - 1905. E. Alvino.
The majestic three-aisled interior under a coffered shade is divided by graceful Gothic arcades. The cathedral contains paintings by Lanfranco and Domenichino and monuments to former rulers.
The oldest part of the temple is the chapel of St. Restitutes - dates back to the 4th century. Its interior is decorated with ceiling paintings by Luca Giordano and a 5th century baptismal font. But the main attraction of the cathedral and one of the wonders of the Christian world is the blood of St. Januaria (patron saint of Naples), miraculously "boiling" twice a year in a sealed flask in the hands of a priest.
