Description of the attraction

About 25 km south of the capital of the same name of the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes, near the village of Archangelos, there is the famous monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika and its holy relic - the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. The Mother of God Tsambika is considered the patroness of all married couples, especially childless ones.

The name of the monastery comes from the word "tsamba", which in translation from the local dialect means "spark, flash". According to legend, once the islanders saw a sparkling light on the top of the hill. Climbing to the top, they found in the branches of a tree a small, literally the size of a palm, an icon of the Mother of God in a silver setting. A little later it turned out that this is the missing icon of one of the monasteries in Cyprus. Several attempts to return the sacred relic were unsuccessful … the icon miraculously returned to the top of the Rhodes hill. Considering this sign as a divine sign, it was decided to establish a temple here in honor of the Mother of God.

So, on the top of a steep picturesque hill, at an altitude of 240 m above sea level, a small chapel of the Virgin of Tsambika appeared, perfectly preserved to this day. Today, 300 steps lead to the holy monastery, and in general the climb is quite tiring, but it is undoubtedly worth it at least just to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the endless sea and Rhodes.

Much later, at the foot of the hill, the monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika was built - a magnificent snow-white temple, covered with red tiles, with a high bell tower. The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary is kept here, to which a huge number of pilgrims from all over the world come to worship every year. There is a large copy in the temple at the top of the hill, and the original is only brought up here on September 8, on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin.

The Monastery of Our Lady of Tsambika is one of the most popular attractions of the island of Rhodes and its main shrine. It is here that women desperate to become mothers come from all over the world in the hope of healing from infertility and learning the joy of motherhood.

The appearance of the icon is associated with a legend, according to which, in the 15th century, local villagers saw strange flashes of light on a tree at the top of the hill (“tsumbo”, translated from the local dialect, means “spark”, “flash”). It turned out that it was a small, palm-sized icon of the Mother of God shining in a silver setting. Soon it turned out that this icon was missing, and it disappeared from a monastery in Cyprus. The icon was returned, but after a while, it again ended up in the same place on the hill. The icon was again transferred to a Cypriot monastery. After the icon miraculously returned to Archangelos from Cyprus three times, it was decided to leave it in its new place.

Not on the top of the hill where the icon was once found, there is now a chapel called Moni Tsambika, and at the foot of the hill is the church of Kato Tsambika. In the church there is the original icon, and in the chapel on the hill - a copy, and only on September 8, on the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, the original is lifted up. It is on this day that women desperate to get pregnant come here to perform a ceremony with an ascent to the mountain, where they ask the Mother of God for help. Many come back after a while - this time to baptize their baby.
