Description of the attraction

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Brest has a different name - the brotherly St. Nicholas Church. This church is distinguished by a not very long, but very dramatic history, inseparable from the history of Brest.

When in 1830 it was decided to move the ancient 500-year-old Brest to a new place, the former city was destroyed, the construction of a new city began, which was given the name Brest-Litovsk. They built everything from scratch: houses, workshops, markets, shops and temples were also built. Churches in the new Brest-Litovsk were built on donations from believers who had to rebuild their houses with their own money.

In 1885, the Orthodox brotherhood of Brest-Litovsk built a beautiful wooden church. The city rumor called her the fraternal church. During the fire that broke out in 1895, half of the city burned down, and with it the brotherly St. Nicholas Church.

It was decided to build a new stone St. Nicholas Church, for which they began to collect donations. Two Orthodox brotherhoods of St. Nicholas and Athanasius of Brest helped with money for the holy cause. Sailors and families of sailors began to donate money to the temple, because St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is considered the patron saint of seafarers. Especially a lot of donations from the families of the victims began to come with the beginning of the Russian-Japanese war in 1904.

The construction of the church began in 1903, however, there was still not enough money. Then the missing amount was contributed by Emperor Nicholas II. The Russian tsar also handed over to the church the lists of the dead sailors of the Pacific Fleet for eternal remembrance.

The Church of St. Nicholas was consecrated on December 6, 1906. Its architectural appearance was influenced by the influence of sailors. It looks like a huge ship. The blue of its domes is similar to the waves of the sea. The church is made in the pseudo-Russian style (imitation of the Moscow style of the 17th century).

The church did not close until 1961, when a widespread struggle against religion began in the USSR. Until 1989, the city archive was located in the Nicholas Church. After much debate and numerous requests, the church was returned to the believers. The temple was finally rebuilt in 1996.
