Description of the attraction

The Larissa Ethnographic Museum is the largest folklore museum in Thessaly and one of the largest and most interesting of its kind in Greece.

In 1974, a public organization was created in the city to collect and study information about the history of culture and traditions of Thessaly. Actually, thanks to the active work of this organization, the first collection was collected, which laid the foundation for the creation of the Ethnographic Museum of Larisa. The museum itself was officially founded in 1981 and two years later finally opened its doors to visitors.

Today, the collection of the Ethnographic Museum contains about 20,000 exhibits, most of which date from the 19th - 20th centuries. The exposition of the museum perfectly illustrates all aspects of culture, as well as the life and life of the population of Thessaly. Here you can see various products made of wood, ceramics, bronze and silver, clothes and accessories, household utensils, furniture, tools related to a wide variety of professions, church relics, documents and photographs, musical instruments and much more. Of particular interest are the collection of engravings dating from the 15th century, the famous prints from Tirnavos, ancient agricultural tools and equipment, and an excellent collection of traditional costumes. The Ethnographic Museum of Larisa also has its own excellent library.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Ethnographic Museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, as well as general educational programs for different groups of the population, various thematic conferences, lectures and seminars.
