Description of the attraction
The Folklore Museum was founded in 1895. After its opening, the museum was located in the building of the stock exchange, and in 1917 it opened in the Schönbrunn Summer Palace. The museum showcases a rich collection of the folk cultural heritage of Austria and neighboring countries. The bulk of the collection covers the period from the 17th to the 19th century, showing everyday life, folk architecture, household needs and concerns.
Exhibits and archival photographs show different types of houses, agricultural farms, interiors, furniture, dishes and other household items of that time. In addition to the interiors, the museum displays casual and festive outfits, jewelry and wedding accessories. Some of the exhibits are dedicated to the folk art of the pre-existing Austro-Hungarian Empire, including musical instruments and religious objects. Separately, visitors can get acquainted with the rural culture of the Alpine region.
The Folklore Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is of interest to everyone who wants to get acquainted with the history of Austrian folk culture.
